INTRODUCTION

The subject aims to develop an understanding of the principles of building preservation and the method of recording it in three documentation methods; measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. The ideas of application and management of architectural historic documentation will be presented as part of the overall knowledge of building preservation. For measured drawings, students are to document historically and architecturally significant buildings in the form of as-built drawings. The task requires 10 to 20 students per group that involve field works consisting measuring technique such as photographing, sketches, use of theodolite and measuring tape. The outcomes of the subject are collections of plans, sections, elevations, details and axonometric views / models; complemented with a report that explains about the background, history, concept, style, construction and ornamentation of buildings.

PROJECT 1 (SKETCHBOOK AND JOURNAL)

This project is an on-site exercise where students have to sketch and documents the physical and intangible qualities of the buildings as well as the immediate context of the site. It can be from an element as broad as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of the ornaments used in the building.

My group was assigned to measure District Office Batu Gajah in Perak, Malaysia. It was the residence of senior British Civil Servant in the locality. We found out that DO house is a combination of neoclassical architecture and malay architecture.

We were to record and annotate :

1. The Genius Loci

2. Poetic Quality

3. Cultural Attributes

4. Technical /Construction details

PROJECT 2 (MEASURED DRAWINGS)

This project aims to produce a set of measured drawings of historical buildings or structures in a specific location. A report containing important and historical information of the buildings will complement the drawings. It is an on-site exercise where students are required to execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise.

In this project i learn how to use the measuring devices needed to measure the building. It took us full 5 days to complete measuring everything. To save some time, our 1st floor sub group decided to measure and cad on site. I realise this method is the most efficient way because we are able to point out the faults in measuring and re-measure the ones we tought are odd.  In here, accuracy ,efficiency, and coordination in group work are important through out this project, and at the end of this project i feel like i've achieved something very important.

As for our model, we cadding team who finished our part in cadding helped the modeling team to build our model

PROJECT 3 (REPORT AND VIDEO ON MEASURED DRAWING)

The report is a document that accompanies the set of drawings for the building that is measured during the semester. Basically, the report will elaborate on the significance of the building being measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. In this report, students are required to relate the architecture of the building to its significance, highlighting how the two support the inhabitation of the building. A video documenting the building is required to provide 3D experience of the building.

3. Recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation

4. Explain the application of architectural historic documentation

5. Recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation

6. Explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements

7. Describe architectural cultural heritage

8. Execute fieldwork and hands-on measurements

9. Translate measured data into scale drawings
