DESIGN STUDIO 2
PROJECT 1. FAMOUS PEOPLE, FAMILIAR FACES.
DIAGRAMMATIC ABSTRACTION
For this project we were to be given one famous architect's design, which was Le Cobusier's Notre Dame du Haut. Our first excercise was to search deeply into the buiding's elements and explain it through video for our classmates and tutors to see.
Then our very first project was to make conceptual models that represents best our building's components. We took 'Quality of Light' as our main conceptual models for Notre Dame du Haut building, since it's what it's best known for.

Project 1

Project 1

“The design process can be thought of as a series of transformations going from uncertainty towards
information. The successive stages of the process are usually registered by some kind of graphic model. In the
final stage of the design process, designers use highly formalized graphic languages as a tool to register the
information that would facilitate the communication process.”
Juan Pablo Bonta
Objective
To investigate and to explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements:
architectonics.-solid, planes, lines and frames. Upon completion of the project student should be able to achieve a
level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept to their project later.
The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated
into this assignment.
Submission requirement
In group of 5, you are to produce a complete set of architectural drawing of the selected project (private residence)
on A3 size tracing paper. (manual).
You are then required to investigate and formulate your findings into a set of 10 models (10x10x10cm). The
models should be precise and informative to express the analysis of the ideas hidden in the project assigned. You
are to use no more than three colours and the models should be well crafted and beautifully made to be rested on
TWO A3 MDF board.
PROJECT 2A. SITE CONDITION & ANALYSIS AT FRASER HILL
For the starter of our Project 2A, we are required to do a site analysis located Fraser Hill. Our chosen site was Paddock. It was a 3 days 2 nights trip, we were saperated into groups of 5, each groups have their own assigned tasks. For our group, we were assigned to do site topography, it was very challenging but we learned a lot from it. After that we were to present infront of our respective tutors and other classmates about our analysis.

1. Site Conditions & Analysis (10%)
In groups (combination of 2 tutorial groups from Project 1), conduct site analysis of the physical context, social, cultural and/or
historical issues within the overall site. Use the following reference as a framework for your recording and analysis of your site:
White, E. 2004. Site Analysis: Diagramming Information for Architectural Design. Tallahassee, Florida: Architectural Media Ltd.
Collect data and record on the following using physical maps/diagrams and models:
Site survey: provide dimensions of its width and depth and indicate any adjacent buildings at the levels of plans, elevations
and sections to create an accurate record of what currently exists
Orientation (sun path) and Climate (rainfall & temperature)
Site topography / contours
Access and Circulation
Existing Structure and Materiality of the site surrounding
Vegetation and Hydrology
Views and Vistas
Historical and Cultural
SWOT
2. Birdwatch Tower (20%)
Individually, produce your personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches.
In group of two, you are to begin with a volume in the form of a solid cube 3 x 3 x 3 meter. By selecting a character, you are to design a Bird Watch Tower at Fraser’s Hill for the purpose of bird watching/contemplation/simply just to enjoy the view. It shall include the activities of resting, meditation, observation, viewing etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with the design. This structure should correspond to the site that you have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.
Aim
The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

This project, we were required to design a bird watching tower for the client assigned to us. My partner, Jillian and i were given Bomoh as our client. Our concept was 'Engulvement' inspired by Allamanda cathartica or so called Buttercup flower.
PROJECT 2B. BIRD WATCHING TOWER

Bird watching tower for bomoh as our client

PROJECT 3. RETREAT HOUSE AT FRASER HILL
With the same client, we were assigned to design a retreat house. My partner and i decided to choose different type of client, my partner choses Malysian Shaman or so called Bomoh, and i chose Indonesian Shaman or so called Dukun. The title for my retreat house is Keris Bali. My client's name is Ki Joko Bodo Originated from Bali, Indonesia. I chose Keris as my concept because i think it represents well the character and desires of my client. Keris is also one of the most important object every dukun used to do black magic. The architecture was greatly inspired by Balinese Architecture, as i wanted my client to 'come back to the root' to where he was born which is in Bali.

Inspired by Balinese Architecture. For Dukun client named : Ki Joko Bodo.

The objectives of this project are:
• To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design
• To introduce students’ to the understanding of user specific design requirements
• To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design
• To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis
Learning Outcomes of this Project
1. interpret and analyse simple site context
2.interpret and analyse client’s character and needs in relation to the design of a small building
3.design a simple building type that meets user requirements and respect site context that balances both internal (architectural spaces/layout/circulation) and external (aesthetics and forms) design values
Tasks - Methodology
As a group you had visited the site Fraser’s Hill and finished the site investigation and ‘nature scanning’ to
initiate the preliminary conceptual approach of the tower design. Now it is important for your work to reflect your understanding of how architecture is created by applying the basic design principles and spatial organization skills. Your work must also illustrate an understanding of how a building is conceptualize and transformed into reality.
Project 2b extends the understanding of design concept and process. It introduces the notion of
architectural space making through the design of a user specific architectural scheme. This project explores the relationship between architectural tectonics, function and space in architecture.
